You Use MS Project but the Project is Out of Control

Problem:
Your project manager is trying to manage a project the way Microsoft would by using MS Project. The truth is that all the project manager’s time is spent maintaining the project file but:

  • The project is late.
  • The project is well over-budget.
  • The marketing department is adding new requirements every week.
  • The bug list is growing.
  • End users have given up hope that the application will be delivered.
  • The development team's morale is low and falling fast.

Solution:
Instead of managing fancy lists and diagrams to impress managers and customers, the project manager should spend his or her time identifying and resolving risks. So, to that project manager, we say: drop MS Project, investigate some of the literature on bringing your project back under control, and spend time handling real-world problems.
