Desktop and File Sharing ArchitecturePopular desktop databases such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft FoxPro, Paradox, and dBase, as well as many others, can be configured for a multi-user environment. These database types are also referred to as File Sharing-Based Data Based Management Systems.
Most desktop databases were originally designed for one or only a few users. With desktop database architecture, almost all data processing occurs on the users workstation or a client computer system via the controlling application. In other words, even though the database may reside on a very fast file server, the data processing is performed on the users computer. The server is used to store the information and performs little or no data processing. It only passes parts of shared files to the client application for processing. See also: |
