Ten Steps to Bringing Your
Project Under Control

Take a deep breath, then:

  1. Garner support from the political forces (i.e.: decision makers) in your organization.
  2. Interview your development team (discuss obstacles, solutions, schedule, current status).
  3. Reconsider the list of features and trim it if necessary.
  4. Do not commit to a new schedule before you are convinced that it is attainable.
  5. Restore the morale of your development team.
  6. Restore any elements of the development process (e.g.: version control, defect-tracking, change control) that may have been abandoned in panic.
  7. Resolve personnel and leadership problems.
  8. Drop error-prone modules.
  9. Divide the project into mini-projects (the smaller the better).
  10. Monitor and control the execution of mini-projects.
